In 2007, Keri Hilson was expected to release her debut album, In A Perfect World. For unknown reasons, a proper lead single never came and the album was constantly pushed back. The year of 2008 was supposed to be her year to shine. During the summer, her first single, “Energy,” was released. The song received no support and the album was pushed back until 2009.

Before the year of 2008 closed, Hilson did release a song featuring Lil Wayne called “Turn Off.” The song had a nice vibe, but did not receive proper airplay, either. However, Polow da Don, the song’s producer felt that the beat was too good to waste. Keri Hilson felt that the topic was too good to pass up.

Instead of just letting the song go to waste, Polow da Don, went back and added some elements to the beat. Then, Keri Hilson re-sang her lyrics and Lil Wayne replaced his rap verse with an auto-tune filled verse and sped up his flow on the song. The final result was a hit single that made Hilson into a star.

In March 2009, the album was released to critical-acclaim. Just like that, Keri Hilson became a superstar in the R&B game. Once her history was revealed, many people wondered why her album had been pushed back so many times. After the success of “Turn Off,” re-titled, “Turnin Me On,” she released another hit, “Knock You Down,” featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo.

After the tremendous success in 2009, Keri Hilson revealed that she was already writing songs for her next album. She made those statements in the summer of 2009. She said that she hoped to begin recording before the end of this year to release her album sometime in the summer of 2010.
